💭 Clinging to the Past: What Rachel’s Decision Says About Us

When I read about Rachel secretly stealing her father’s idols in Genesis 31, I used to brush past it like it was just another strange Old Testament detail. But the more I sit with it, the more I realize… I am Rachel sometimes.
Rachel was stepping into a new season. God had already promised to bless and protect Jacob’s household. She had every reason to trust God’s plan. But instead of walking away freely, she grabbed something from her past on the way out — just in case.
Those family idols weren’t just decorations. In that culture, they represented inheritance, protection, and authority. So when Rachel took them, she wasn’t being sentimental — she was carrying a backup plan.
And honestly… how often do we do the same?
We step into new chapters knowing God has good plans for us — but we still hold on to our old coping mechanisms. We keep old relationships on standby. We cling to patterns and mindsets that the Lord has already called us to leave behind.
We say we trust Him… but we still take the idols “just in case.”
God is inviting me (and maybe you, too) into a deeper place of confidence — the kind that doesn’t require backup plans.
If He called me out, He will keep me.
If He promised to lead me, He will never abandon me.
Rachel’s story is a gentle reminder that I can’t fully walk into the promises that God has for me while still clinging to the past.
Reflection Questions
What idols or “backup plans” am I still secretly holding on to?
Do I truly trust God to provide and protect me in this season?
What would change if I released those old things once and for all?
Prayer
Lord, show me the areas where I’m still holding onto the past. Give me the courage to release every idol, every false comfort, and every backup plan. Help me walk into the new with full confidence in You. Amen.
